Subject Matter:
I like to paint many different themes, but my favorite paintings are related to fantasy, Halloween, nature, animals and birds. Many of my paintings would be considered "light Gothic" in theme. My favorite art is spooky, yet cute, whimsical and mysterious.
Influences:
Influences for my paintings come from Edward Gorey illustrations, the illustrative work of Tim Burton, and the psychedelic music posters of the 1960s. I appreciate the line work and dark sense of humor in both Gorey's and Burton's work. I admire the psychedelic poster designs for their intense color, elaborate shapes, and Victorian imagery. The kinds of shapes that inspire me are curving and organic. I find this inspiration in nature and enjoy seeing these shapes in decorative wrought iron.
Medium:
My choice of media includes any kind of paint that can be watered down, such as watercolor, acrylic, and ink. Although I tend to dilute the paint heavily, I try to keep the pigment really bright and intense. I enjoy watering down the media so I can work in layers to get the desired effect. Building up different transparent colors to add dimension to a painting is my favorite part of the process. I don't aim for total control of the media, so I can watch what the paint does naturally.
